Congressman Paul Hodes Announces Online Access for Veterans Seeking Emergency Education Benefits

October 2, 2009

Washington, DC--- Today, Congressman Paul Hodes announced that New Hampshire veterans who are eligible for emergency payment of their Post-9/11 GI Bill education benefits will be able to apply online. Beginning today, veterans can access the application by visiting www.va.gov.

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki announced this week that the VA has authorized checks for up to $3,000 to be given to veterans who have applied for benefits but have yet to receive their payment. The checks will begin to be distributed today, and are available at 57 regional benefits offices around the country. Instead of traveling to the Manchester benefits office, New Hampshire veterans can apply for emergency assistance online. Payments will then be sent through the mail.

"New Hampshire veterans have given so much to our country and deserve our full support," said Congressman Hodes. "Beginning today, veterans can apply online to receive immediate assistance with the financial burden of their education. I will continue to stand up for Granite State veterans and ensure that they have access to quality, affordable education when they return home."

Veterans who prefer to travel to the Manchester office can do so. The VA office in Manchester is located at 275 Chestnut Street. Veterans are advised to bring photo identification, a course schedule and an eligibility certificate in order to request the advance payment.

Last year, Congressman Hodes proudly supported the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which provided the largest investment in veterans’ education since the original GI Bill. The emergency checks will be deducted from future payments, as they are an advance on each veteran’s education benefits.
