Congressman Hodes Stands up for Small Businesses, Votes to Create New Jobs

October 29, 2009

Washington, DC--- Congressman Hodes today stood up for New Hampshire’s small businesses and voted to expand credit and access to loans to the small businesses that will help create new jobs across the Granite State. The Small Business Financing and Investment Act will increase access to credit for small businesses that have been hit hard by the economic crisis.

"Small business is big business in New Hampshire," said Congressman Hodes. "Small businesses across the Granite State will lead the way in creating new jobs for New Hampshire workers. With expanded access to credit and loans, small businesses will have the resources they need to provide good-paying jobs and put Granite Staters back to work."

There are over 140,000 small businesses in New Hampshire, and more than 85,000 New Hampshire residents are self-employed. Despite claims from financial institutions that lending is on the rise, many New Hampshire businesses have experienced restricted access to credit.

The Small Business Financing and Investment Act will help support $44 billion in new lending and investment for small businesses. The legislation includes incentives to encourage community banks to lend to small businesses, and makes it easier for small businesses to navigate red tape that can slow down the loan process. The legislation will also extend parts of the Obama jobs and recovery plan that eliminated costly fees on Small Business Administration loans.

The bill provides tools to help veterans interested in starting their own businesses.  For veterans, the legislation offers higher guarantees and lower cost loans, so they can access more affordable capital.

With the creation of a Rural Lender Outreach Program, this bill reduces application burdens for small business borrowers and lenders in these regions, increasing the flow of capital to businesses in rural areas.  The Rural Lender Outreach Program also increases loan guarantees, encouraging banks to lend to rural entrepreneurs.

The bill also makes permanent the Community Express program, which promotes lending to small businesses owned by women and economically disadvantaged individuals.
