Congressman Paul Hodes Announces His Support for the House Health Care Reform Bill

November 5, 2009

Washington, DC--- Congressman Paul Hodes today announced that he will vote for the House version of the health insurance reform overhaul. He announced his support on a conference call with reporters today and was joined on the call by Michael St. Germain, a Concord small business owner, who spoke about the legislation’s benefits for New Hampshire small business.

"This proposal will lower costs, increase quality of care, increase competition for insurance companies and put New Hampshire families back in control of their health care," Congressman Paul Hodes said. "This legislation will put the necessary rules of the road on insurance companies and help deliver affordable, quality health care to every family that needs it."

"We have a choice between standing with New Hampshire middle class families and small businesses or standing for the status quo and the big insurance companies that deny care. I choose to stand with families and small businesses who want affordable health insurance and want control over their own health care," Congressman Hodes added.

In New Hampshire’s 2nd District:

·       800 families in the Second District will avoid bankruptcy from this bill;

·       35,000 uninsured will now be insured;

·       105,000 Medicare beneficiaries will have improved coverage;

·       and 7,800 of 2nd District constituents will be helped by closing the donut hole on prescription drug coverage.

This legislation strengthens employer-based health insurance and lowers the crippling health insurance costs for small businesses. This legislation will allow 18,800 small businesses in Congressman Hodes’ district to get affordable health insurance. And the legislation included Congressman Hodes’ proposal to provide small businesses tax credits for providing coverage. 16,900 small businesses will be eligible for this tax credit in the Second District.
